Public swimming is coming to sports site

THE Oriental Sports Center, which will hold the 14th FINA World Championships starting Saturday, will become a public exercise venue for local residents when the competition ends, local authorities said yesterday.

People will need to pay only 20 yuan (US$3.10) to swim in the world-class stadium. And the exercise pool next to the outdoor diving pool will be open in winter to meet the needs of year-round swimmers.

Li Yuyi, director of the Shanghai Sports Bureau, also said people can apply for free swimming tickets to the sports center starting August 8,and that the free swimming will last one month. But he did not reveal the application procedure.

"We hope to create better exercise facilities to the citizens," Li said.

The sports center, designed to hold competition in more than 20 sports including basketball, badminton and tennis, will be transformed into an ice skating venue for the Grand Prix Figure Skating Cup of China on November 4-6.

The World Cup Short Track Speed Skating will be held there in December.
