Public warned to stay indoors
VULNERABLE groups are being urged to stay indoors once again today as a veil of heavy pollution continues to shroud Shanghai.
Children, senior citizens and anyone suffering from heart or lung disease should avoid going outside, the environmental bureau said yesterday.
People should also keep their windows closed to stop polluted air from entering their homes, it said.
The air quality index is expected to range between 220 and 240 this morning, forecasters said.
The recent lack of wind has allowed pollutants to build up and they will continue to pose a health risk today, they said.
Local authorities yesterday issued a “blue” pollution alert — the lowest in a four-color system — as the air quality index soared to 254 at 8am. PM2.5 particles were the major pollutant, the bureau said.
To help tackle the lingering problem, officials said they will ban straw burning, and ensure roads are frequently cleaned and construction sites are doused with water to reduce dust.
Winds from the east and southeast should help to disperse the pollution tomorrow, the forecasters said.
