Pudong airport will open 4th runway in March

Pudong International Airport’s fourth runway will open in March, the airport authority said today.

Aircraft will be able to take off and land simultaneously on all four runways and this is expected to reduce the number of flight delays, Li Derun, president of the Shanghai Airport Authority, told Shanghai People’s Congress.

Currently, passenger aircraft have to taxi a long way to one of the three runways at the airport and takeoff one after another.

“Sometimes aircraft even have to taxi from Terminal 2 to runway No. 1 near Terminal 1, which wastes a long time,” added Li, who is also a legislator.

The fourth runway is 3,800 meters long and 60 meters wide. With the new runway the airport’s annual capacity is expected to reach 60 million passengers with 555,000 takeoffs and landings.
