Pudong crash kills 1, injures 6

ONE person died and six others were injured in a five-vehicle collision yesterday in the Pudong New Area.

The injured were treated in a local hospital. Two were still in critical condition yesterday, doctors said.

Jiyang Road and surrounding streets in Pudong were congested for about two hours after the accident.

The crash happened at 11:44am on Jiyang Road, police said.

A cargo truck lost control and headed toward oncoming traffic, crossing a barrier and green space, after first hitting a sedan going in the same direction, said witnesses. After entering oncoming traffic, the truck hit two taxis and collided with a hearse.

"The truck just sped toward us," said a taxi driver surnamed Rao, whose car was damaged.

Rao said he saw the truck had a flat tire.

"I could not move anymore, being stuck in the car," said a passenger surnamed Wang, who suffered head injuries.

One man in the sedan was killed.

Police said they are still investigating the cause of the accident.

Police officers said the hearse was carrying a body at the time of the crash.

After the accident, police closed a ramp from the Lupu Bridge on the Pudong side. Traffic on the ramp returned to normal by 1pm after the damaged vehicles were towed away.
