Pudong gas leak sends people fleeing homes at night

A natural gas metering station in Pudong District was found leaking in the wee hours yesterday, sending hundreds of people fleeing their homes.

The accident happened around 12:02am at the Yongtai Gas Metering Station near the intersection of Yanggao Road S. and Yongtai Road. No one was injured, police said.

Nearby residents said they woke up to loud gushing sounds at midnight and smelt stinky air all around.

A jet of dark gas was leaking from a red pipe at the metering station and shooting up into the sky, according to witnesses.

Police cordoned off the area while firefighters rushed to the site and sprayed water to dilute the thick smoke.

The accident was caused by the value of a dust filter in the pipe of a pressure-converting facility. As a routine safety check, dust-laden gas is released from the pipe, said repairmen from the gas company.

It was not the first time for the metering station to release natural gas to clear dust from the pipe, a local resident said.
