Pudong nearly comes to a halt due to severe traffic

Drivers in the Pudong New Area have been asked to take alternative routes as severe traffic jams have been reported on several streets near Pudong Avenue with the commencement of a construction project, local traffic police said.

The worst gridlock was on Changyi Road, where vehicles were nearly double the designed capacity, traffic police said.

The morning rush in the area started 30 minutes earlier than usual at 7am and lasted until 10am, said Li Qianlong, a traffic police officer.

Pudong Avenue was closed between Pudong Road S. and Xiepu Road on Saturday to make way for the construction of a “triple decker” road and a Metro project. Construction is expected to take five years.

Drivers have been told to detour to Zhangyang Road and Yanggao Road S.

Approximately 30 bus routes have been altered due to the closure.

The three-tier, 7.9-kilometer link will include part of Metro Line 14, plus a road tunnel and road between the exit of Yan?an Road E. Tunnel and Jinqiao Road.
