Pudong tourism discounts to help drive out scalpers

THE Pudong New Area will start to offer a one-day tourism package starting September 16, which offer discounted group tickets to individual tourists to visit the three landmark buildings - the Shanghai World Financial Center, Jin Mao Tower and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower - as a countermeasure to scalpers.

The market was previously dominated by scalpers, who worked with tour guides to obtain group package tickets and sell them at a higher price to individual tourists. A lot of tourists have complained that they were followed and harassed by tourism scalpers, who pressured them to buy tickets. Some scalpers sold fake tickets.

"We have launched a campaign to crack down on the scalpers gathered in Lujiazui," said Li Zhengming, an official of the Pudong New Area Commission of Commerce's tourism department.

The government has invited licensed tourism agencies to provide temporary group organizers to tourists and offer discounted tickets to scenic spots.

Individual tourists need only to reach each scenic spots at the required time to form a temporary group with other individual tourists.

The government will launch two tourist service booths, close to the entrance of the Lujiazui Metro Station and the Aquarium.

Tickets for the one-day tour will be available at the booths. In the future, tourists will be able to get them in hotels, rail stations and tourism agencies. The entrance fees of some tourist sites in the Puxi area and the city sightseeing bus fare are also included in the product, which charges up to 180 yuan (US$28.40) per person.
