Quotas for 2015 Shanghai Marathon to be allotted through draw of lots

THE 2015 Shanghai International Marathon will be held on November 8, featuring a total of 35,000 runners in four categories.
This year’s event, the 20th since being launched, will see some adjustments in the route, and the quotas will be allotted through draw of lots instead of following the “first come, first served”rule, organizers announced on Tuesday.
The full 42.2-kilometer marathon has an entry of 15,000 people, 7,000 more compared to last year. The 21km half-marathon will feature 8,000 runners, 2,000 less than last year. 7,000 people will take part in the 10km race, and 5,000 for the 5km mini marathon.
All races will start at 7am from the Financial Square on Bund (near the intersection of Zhongshan Road E. No. 1 and Fuzhou Road) this year instead of from the Chen Yi Square. The full and half-marathons finish at Shanghai Stadium in Xuhui District while the 10km run ends at Fuxing Park in Huangpu District. The finish line for the 5km mini marathon will be set at Shanghai Exhibition Center in Jing’an District this year.
The organizer also adjusted the route of the full marathon, removing the section along Waimalu Road while adding Xintiandi’s Taiping Lake and Miaojiang Road in Expo zone into the route.
Runners seeking for a spot in any of the four categories can register from September 12 to 17 via the official website at www.shang-ma.com or through the event’s APP. The quotas will be allocated by lottery draw and the results will be announced on September 21.
“Elite” runners — those who completed last year’s marathon within 3 hours and 30 minutes (men) or 3 hours and 50 minutes (women), or half marathon within 1 hour and 40 minutes (men) or 1 hour and 55 minutes (women) — will be able to apply via a priority channel from September 10-11.
Meanwhile, the fastest 200 men and 200 women runners of the 2015 Shanghai International Half Marathon held in May, as well as the top 20 runners of the 2015 New Year Run, will be guaranteed an entry into the November event after they register through the official channel from September 10-11.
The entry fees are 100 yuan (US$15.7) for Chinese runners and 300 yuan for foreigners in the marathon and half marathon; 60 yuan for Chinese and 200 yuan for foreigners in the shorter runs.
