Real-Life Test
THIS was not a drill.
Metro officials had planned to intentionally disrupt service yesterday morning to test the resilience of an important World Expo subway route on the first morning of Expo public previews.
But before they could declare their make-believe "passenger surge and congestion," they got the real thing.
Larger-than-expected crowds crammed onto Line 13, the new, short subway ride that goes directly into the Expo site from the Madang Road station, where trains from Line 9 disgorge.
Overwhelmed, traffic authorities issued a passenger volume alert at 9:30am, half an hour earlier than planned.
It ended at 10:25am, with 1,100 people taken to Expo by bus.
Officials called the measures "effective."
