Reclaimed land for Pudong's 5th runway

SHANGHAI will build a fifth runway for the Pudong International Airport on land it will reclaim from the sea.

The new runway will be open by 2014 when China's large jumbo is due to take its maiden flight, today's Oriental Morning Post reported, citing officials with Shanghai Airport Group.

Meanwhile, Shanghai's other airport, Hongqiao International Airport, is bracing for the transfer of flights from Terminal 1 to the new Terminal 2 due to open next Tuesday, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

Flights of 11 domestic airliners will be moved to the new terminal. The airport will close at midnight on Monday to ease the transfer.

Also on Tuesday, the western extension of Metro Line 2 will open to transport travelers to and from Hongqiao airport. However, the last train runs at 10:53pm, prompting airport authorities to seek later hours.
