Record number of students seek admission into theater academy

CHINESE youngsters are betting big on the entertainment business.

A record number of students — 2,1782 — are sitting for the entrance examination to Shanghai Theater Academy today for a total of 418 seats in acting, directing, TV hosting and scriptwriting.

Xu Yong, an admission official from the academy, said that the number of students vying for seats had almost doubled since 2012. The exams will last until February 24.

Only one out of the 245 applicants will win the most sought-after berth in the acting department.

The applicants will be tested in recitation, singing, dancing, gymnastics and an impromptu performance. The judges include celebrated actors, theater experts and directors.

Wang Luoyong, director of the academy’s musical theater center, said the etiquette and virtues of students will also be taken into account.

Successful candidates will also have to sit for a nationwide college entrance exam in June.

Competition is fierce for a place in art college in Beijing too.

A record 3,8144 students have applied for admission to the Beijing Film Academy, a 25.5 percent increase over last year. Among them, 8,526 students have applied for the acting course but only 75 will be enrolled.
