Record-making transfusion
SHANGHAI Cord Blood Bank set a new national record yesterday after completing its 1,000th transfusion.
The recipient was a 50-year-old woman suffering from leukemia, and the procedure was carried out at the Shanghai No. 1 People’s Hospital. The two-year survival rate for patients who have received umbilical cord blood transplants from the bank is now more than 82 percent. Medical experts said umbilical cord transplant is a mature technology and can be used to benefit a range of people suffering from blood disease and immunity disorders.
