Rejected suitor sets fire to in-laws' home

A MAN has been jailed for three years for setting fire to the home of his prospective in-laws after they rejected his proposal to marry their daughter.

Jiading District People's Court convicted Qian Wenli, 18, of arson, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

Qian proposed to his girlfriend's parents last year after they had a baby girl. But he was rejected after failing to pay the 30,000 yuan (US$4,394) of gifts they demanded.

Qian again had a quarrel with his in-laws on October 26 last year and he went to their home to get his baby.

He carried some gasoline to threaten them but splashed it around their house and set it on fire, the report said.
