Removal of needle from penis puzzles doctors
DOCTORS in a local hospital are trying to figure out a way to remove a 3-centimeter-long needle from a 14-year-old boy's penis three months after he inserted it with a sewing machine.
A doctor surnamed Liu with Changhai Hospital told Shanghai Daily that the boy was taken to the hospital yesterday morning in acute pain. When doctors took the boy for an X-ray check, Liu said they were shocked to see the needle stuck inside his urethra. It is in danger of moving into his bladder, which could endanger his life.
According to his parents, the boy, surnamed Sun, started complaining that he felt uncomfortable when using the toilet about three months ago. They took him to several hospitals but regular checks didn't reveal anything.
It was not until blood showed up in Sun's urine that he confessed to his parents that he put the needle into his own penis via urethra "out of curiosity" when playing with a sewing machine at home. But he put it in too deep and failed to take it out again, Liu said.
"The needle has stayed inside his urethra for too long a time and has already caused serious infections," said Liu. "Half the needle makes its way into his bladder, and his life will be in danger."
Liu said the doctors are discussing how to fetch the needle in what promises to be a very difficult operation.
