Repair work on Waibaidu Bridge starts Monday

REPAIR work on the damaged Waibaidu Bridge on the Bund will start from next Monday, Shanghai Road Administration Bureau said today.

A part of the structure of the iconic 109-year-old bridge on the eastern side was broken and distorted after a truck hit the bridge at about 5am on April 25.

The repair work will replace the damaged steel parts with new and stronger ones, but the look and structure of the bridge will not be changed, the bureau said.

During the work, which will last 20 days, the pedestrian walk on the eastern side and one of the motor vehicle lanes will be closed, but vehicles and pedestrians will be able to pass the bridge from both directions in daytime.

The riveting work will last from June 9 to 24 between 12 and 4:30am every day during which all motor vehicle lanes on the bridge will be shut down, but the pedestrian walk on the western side will remain open.

After the accident, the bridge no longer allows vehicles weighing over 10 tons to pass, and experts have been monitoring safety of the bridge while waiting for the final reparation plan to be worked out.

Qinshun, the company which owns the truck whose driver caused the accident, will be ordered to suspend its business for a month due to illegal transportation of construction waste, as Waibaidu Bridge doesn’t allow trucks between 8pm to 7am the next day, police said last week.

The head of the company said after the accident that the company will compensate for the damage made to the bridge.
