A MAN who jumped into the Suzhou Creek to save a woman who was trying to commit suicide had to be saved, too, after becoming exhausted in the water, police said.
About 6:20pm yesterday, a young woman suddenly jumped into the river at the Hengfeng Road Bridge. Many bystanders rushed to save her, and one man jumped in and handed the woman to others near the shore, witnesses said.
By that time, the man had become exhausted. Bystanders tried to help him, but winds had whipped up the water, making the rescue more difficult. A young man quickly climbed a willow tree near the river and broke a tree branch for the man to grab. Others used belts to try to rescue him. They eventually were able to get him out of the water.
Both the woman and her rescuer were in good condition after the incident, witnesses said.
Police said the woman told then she tried to commit suicide due to emotional problems.
