Reservations are way to go, especially for China Pavilion

ALTHOUGH visitors to the first public preview of the Shanghai World Expo had to line up for more than an hour for a reservation ticket, organizers still told people to try - because the ticket is a must for going into the China Pavilion.

Reservations can be a big time-saver, officials added, because people can make reservations for six pavilions at the same time.

Visitors can go into the pavilion about three hours after getting reservation tickets, officials said.

Yesterday, all the reservation machines put in operation were crowded with visitors. Visitors reported queues of at least 100 meters long, and said people had to wait nearly an hour for a ticket.

A breakdown made things worse. Around 9am, about half the 16 machines at a site near the China Pavilion crashed. And the rest somehow also stopped operation.

Organizers later decided to distribute tickets manually. The tickets were gone in about an hour.

Some visitors said they were scared by the crowds, and chose to give up.

Almost all the pavilions that opened yesterday were circled by long queues.
