Residential building hit by fire
A FIRE swept through an old downtown residential building in Jing'an District last night, straining the nerves of hundreds of households in the community.
There were no reports of casualties as people were evacuated from the three-story building quickly.
The fire started about 8:20pm on the third floor of Jing'an Villa, near Nanjing Road W.
"I was very scared," said Le Tianming, who first discovered the fire after detecting rubber burning next door.
As Le rushed out, he said the building's sprinkler system activated in the corridor.
Le told Shanghai Daily only one man lived in the household where the fire started and that he got out of the building unscathed.
The fire was put out by about 8:50pm, authorities said. Fire engines had to park on nearby main thoroughfares like Nanjing Road and Weihai Road as the alley leading to Jing'an Villa is narrow.
