Restored classics to be screened at Shanghai International Film Festival

THE 20th Shanghai International Film Festival, to be held from June 17 to 26, released the name list of a new batch of classic movies to be screened during the fest.

In the popular festival unit of Tribute to Masters, the festival will tip its hat to Rainer Werner Fassbinder, who was one of the "Four Masters of New German Cinema." His six classic works including "Love is Colder than Death," "Fear Eats the Soul," "Fontane Effi Briest," "Chinese Roulette," "World on a Wire" and "Veronika Voss" will be shown to commemorate the 35th anniversary of his death and exhibit his distinctive artistic style.

Born in Bavaria, southern Germany in 1945, Fassbinder lived in a lonely and uncared-for childhood during the worst decline and turmoil of Germany. Loneliness and sensitiveness made him susceptible even to the subtlest relationship between people.

In 1982, Fassbinder was found dead in the bed at his apartment, only a few days after his 37th birthday. During his short film career of 14 years, Fassbinder made 41 remarkable feature films at an amazing producing speed. Female roles were especially vivid in his films, demonstrating various characters on the screen.

In the 4k Restoration film unit, classic movies will be remastered digitally in 4K and displayed for the movie buffs. With the new technology, colors and contrast from the old film footage will be enhanced for a new generation of film enthusiasts.

Among the classics are the war epic "The Battle of Algiers," drama film "The Tree of Wooden Clogs," crime film "The Professional," fantasy film "The Fifth Element," comedy romance "Manhattan," drama film "The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums" and suspense film "Tales of Ugetsu."
