Retired Official Faces Corruption Counts

A former head of Pudong's Agricultural Development Bureau is on trial in Shanghai for alleged abuse of power which resulted in a loss of 50 million yuan (US$7.32 million) for the state. He is also accused of taking 2.45 million yuan in bribes for personal use.

The trial of Zhu Rongchang, 63, now retired, began on Sunday in Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court.

The court heard that Zhu made an inaccurate evaluation of an 80-hectare plot of land owned by a company affiliated with the bureau. He had also not sought his superiors' approval before selling it.

Additional charges allege he sold the equity interest in companies "at a very low price" and using 1.6 million yuan of a firm's capital to pay for cohorts' houses.
