Retirement homes get broadband Internet access and IPTV

RESIDENTS in 50 retirement homes in the city will be enjoying broadband Internet access and IPTV by the end of the year, said the Shanghai Senior Citizens Foundation.

The project aims to enrich senior citizens' lives and make it easier for them to communicate with family members.

Seniors can talk with their families through video chatting and order their favorite TV programs, officials said.

Trials have taken place at the Yixian No. 3 Rest Home, which has 500 residents, and proved a big success.

Officials were concerned that senior citizens would be reluctant to use computers, but these fears were unfounded.

"Many people think that entertainment for senior citizens extends only as far as chess, newspapers and TV," said Liu Deming, an official with the rest home.

"But the elderly are also interested in using the Internet, so rest homes should keep up with the times."

Zhang Zhongping, an 80-year-old, said he liked to play cards online with friends and visit news websites. "The Internet is truly convenient and interesting," he said.
