Rise in bus and Metro thefts prompts tough action
SHANGHAI police are stepping up the fight against theft on bus and Metro, especially in the suburban areas, where the crime is on the rise and sometimes causing violence.
Police have nabbed about 200 thieves since New Year and seized stolen items worth nearly 200,000 yuan, Shanghai Public Security Bureau said.
In the city's outskirts where many migrant workers live and work, the thieves followed workers going home for the Spring Festival carrying rolls of cash they earned after a year of toil, police said.
Foreigners are also their easy target, police added.
Thieves can pull a quick trick on the victims and cut through two pockets within 20 seconds to steal money. Once discovered, a thief may threaten violence. A gang of thieves were caught early last month for stabbing four passengers who thwarted their attempt to steal a woman on a bus in Minhang District.
