Road collapses at Wanda Plaza construction site

A ROAD collapsed at a construction last night in Baoshan District. It was unknown if there were any casualties.

Police said the cave in was 50 meters long and 10 meters wide, according to Xinhua news agency.

Police, fire and safety supervision department officials had cordoned off the scene. An investigation into the cause of the collapse at the site of the future commercial plaza was ongoing.

The collapse happened at the Baoshan Wanda Plaza project about 8:30pm on Yi'erba Jinian Road. The site is across the street from a residential area. Large cracks were seen last night at the gate of the construction site. Part of the enclosure wall collapsed about 3 meters.

"There was a huge sound and I thought it was an earthquake," said a security guard surnamed Zhou, who works in the residential area across the street. "Later I saw the wall and road had just sank."

The district government said the collapse area was 20 meters long, 5 meters wide and 7 meters deep.

Yi'erba Jinian Road and Gonghexin Road were closed to traffic. Electricity, water and gas supplies to households in the area were not affected.

Some residents nearby later found cracks on walls in their homes.

China State Construction Engineering Corp, which is building the plaza, set up a temporary steel fence and dumped gravel on the road to prevent another collapse.
