Robber pair 'inspired by movies'
RAILWAY police who spotted two young men behaving suspiciously found them in possession of a home-made gun, 30 bullets and a knife.
They later told police they had been inspired by gangster movies and had planned to carry out armed robberies in Shanghai and nearby provinces.
The arrests were made inside the railway station in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, on Saturday. The pair, only identified by their surnames Tan, 18, and Chen, 20, were from Zunyi, Guizhou Province. They told police they were poor and wanted money to spend over the Spring Festival.
They bought the weapons in Zunyi the week before and took a train to Wuxi, where they had both worked before, police said. Tan also bought a fake identification card.
The two told police they hadn't succeeded in robbing anyone in Wuxi and were planning to go to Shanghai and Hangzhou.
They were waiting for a train to Shanghai when they were seized.
Police became suspicious because the two seemed to be holding things under their coats. They tried to run away when police tried to question them. Security guards helped in the arrests.
Police also found the two had more than 6,000 yuan (US$878) in cash on them.
