Robbery getaway bid leaves 5 in hospital

AN armed robber, who tried to get away in a hijacked taxi, ended up crashing the vehicle and injuring five others, including himself.

The 28-year-old man surnamed Jin tried to rob an Internet cafe yesterday afternoon on Dongbaoxing Road in Hongkou District.

As he fled the cafe he stopped a taxi and pushed out the driver of the Shanghai Haibo taxi company after slashing him with his knife.

But Jin only managed to crash into another taxi and a scooter on Xijiangwan Road near Tongxin Road, not far away from the Internet cafe.

The impact of the collision was so huge that the other taxi, belonging to the Blue Union, split into two from the middle.

The driver of the taxi, a passenger in it and the scooter rider were all rushed to the hospital but were in stable condition.

Jin was also injured in the crash and stuck inside the vehicle before help arrived. He was handcuffed by the police and taken to the hospital.

"The suspect was very emotional and refused to cooperate with the investigation," an officer with the Hongkou District police told Shanghai Daily.
