Robotic surgery on the rise

SINCE China introduced Da Vinci Surgical Robot System in 2006, the nation has finished over 40,000 robotic surgeries involving dozens of medical departments.

Robotic surgery has become an effective treatment for patients with colorectal cancer, as it imposes less trauma and quicker recovery through cooperation with laparoscope. “A 3D view during the surgery allows doctors to perform a more precise and accurate surgery without cutting the patient open,” said Dr Qin Xinyu from Zhongshan Hospital on the Shanghai International Colorectal Symposium over the weekend.

“Over 90 percent of colorectal cancer at our hospital is treated with minimally invasive surgery. Both surgery effects and efficiency tops the nation, while medical bill is only two thirds of traditional measures,” Qin said.

Colorectal cancer has been rising quickly in big cities. According to Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention, lung cancer, colorectal cancer and gastric cancer are the three leading cancers in the city. Colorectal cancer has been rising from No.7 in 1970s to the current second leading cancer.

“Unhealthy diet, prevalence of colonoscopy check and the rising number of elderly people are the major causes for the increase of colorectal cancer,” said Dr Xu Jianmin from Zhongshan Hospital, whose team conducted the largest number of robotic surgery on colorectal cancer in the nation. “Colorectal cancer is a treatable disease. Even though it has spread to other organs, we can conduct surgery on such patients to prolong their life and improve their life quality as much as we can.”
