Runaway taxi cheat caught in hospital
A MAN believed to have cheated a number of cabbies by running out on taxi fares was caught and fined by police yesterday, after bumping into one of his former victims.
The man, who needed to visit Putuo District Central Hospital regularly for injections, is believed to have cheated many cabbies by getting them to take him to hospital then running off without paying.
Dazhong Taxi Co driver Li Guojun picked up the passenger at the crossing of Haining Road and Xizang Road N. about 10:30am yesterday.
The passenger asked for a ride to Wuxi, in Jiangsu Province. He first volunteered to pay 800 yuan (US$117), about double the usual fee for the trip, and then increased the offer to 1,500 yuan.
But he asked the driver to drop him off at Putuo hospital first and wait for him to pick up medication.
"At this point, it occurred to me that the same thing happened about six months ago," Li said. Then, Li had waited 50 minutes outside the hospital but never saw his passenger again.
Li realized it was the same man. This time, the passenger jumped out of the taxi when it was slowing down and ran into a pharmacy next door to the hospital.
The cabbie gave chase and found his runaway getting an injection in the emergency department.
Pharmacy clerks told police the man had cheated many cabbies before but none of the others felt it worth filing complaints.
Putuo District police caught the passenger and ordered him to pay 200 yuan to the Dazhong cabbie.
