Sailor stable after smashing jaws in ship fall
A CHINESE sailor who suffered life-threatening facial injuries when he fell on his ship while it was docked in a local port is recovering in hospital.
The 33-year-old crewman surnamed Mei lost his balance and fell heavily on the deck of a Panama-registered freighter about 11am yesterday, said Jinshan Port immigration police. He landed face down, fracturing his jawbones.
"The sailor was in great pain and his face was badly swollen," said an immigration police officer.
Police whisked the injured man through immigration procedures and rushed him to a local hospital to receive emergency treatment.
By yesterday afternoon, he was in a stable condition. He cannot have surgery until the swelling goes down.
Strong winds may have caused Mei to lose his balance on the ship, according to the man's colleagues.
