Sailors saved after ship stranded

SIXTEEN foreign sailors on a Panama-flagged cargo ship have been saved after the ship broke down on the East China Sea near Shanghai, rescue team said today.

The ship, BANDAI V, reported steering engine malfunction at about 10:49pm yesterday.

The rescue team, based at the mouth of Yangtze River, arrived and towed the stranded ship away this morning, according to Shanghai maritime authority.

Carrying chemicals, the ship was on its way back to dodge the upcoming Typhoon Saola that are expected to slash the East China seashores later this week, rescuers said.
