Sandstorm to gunk up the city’s air

A sandstorm from northern China is going to add extra pollutants to the city's air, possibly by late this afternoon, according to local environmental authorities.

Wang Qian, a forecaster at the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center, added the affect would not be strong.

The sandstorm was reportedly moving south and thus far had brought colder and dirtier air to Henan and Shandong provinces, as well as Xuzhou City in northern Jiangsu Province.

As of 2pm, Shanghai’s air quality index was 109. The concentration of toxic PM2.5 particles was 82 micrograms per cubic meter, more than triple the safety guidelines set by the World Health Organization.

Wang said the main pollutant would likely change to PM10 particles later today due to the sandstorm’s influence.

He advised everyone who is going outdoors to wear a mask.
