Scaffolding collapse sparks jail terms

TWO men directly responsible for a scaffolding collapse were sentenced to jail yesterday at Xuhui District People's Court.

Four workers died in the accident after Shanghai Jianlian Electronic Co Ltd contracted a workshop rebuilding project in early 2009. The project manager Lin Jianneng appointed Wang Zhongchun, an unqualified builder, to set up the scaffolding. Both were sentenced to two years in prison. On April 19, 2009, when workers were standing on the scaffold to remove the wall of the liftwell, it collapsed. The four workers fell to the bottom of the liftwell.
