Search in river for lovers' tiff leap man
RESCUERS are searching for a young man who jumped into Suzhou Creek to retrieve his bag following a row with his girlfriend on Monday night.
Police said yesterday they have recovered his backpack and wallet but were pessimistic about finding the man, who was not named, alive.
Officers said they had searched 200 meters either side of the spot from where he is said to have jumped.
Police dismissed rumors the man had attempted suicide following the quarrel, saying he went into the river to get his bag.
"They were having an argument, during which the man's backpack was thrown into the river," said Han Jun, an officer with the water police.
The incident took place about 9pm on Monday on Nansuzhou Road, near Wuzhen Road Bridge.
The man's girlfriend was taken by police for questioning. Investigations continue.
