Search stalls for hiker
HEAVY rain halted the search for a Shanghai teacher who has been missing for nearly a week on a mountain in Yunnan Province.
About 600 people are searching for Ren Shengjie, 25, who has not been seen since last Tuesday, when he went hiking solo on Cangshan Mountain in Dali Prefecture.
The area is more than 3,000 meters above sea level.
Based on his last text message received by rescuers on Wednesday afternoon, Ren was believed to have broken his leg in a fall.
Before his handset battery died, rescuers used GPS to get within about 1 kilometer of Ren's location, said Zhang Dingkun, deputy director of the Cangshan Mountain Protection and Administration Bureau.
But poor weather, including heavy fog and intermittent rain over the weekend, and the mountain's dense vegetation made it difficult for rescuers.
Zhang said the search will go on until they find Ren.
Villagers in the area told Ren's cousin that people trapped on the mountain can survive for some time.
The cousin told Shanghai Daily that this information has helped lift the spirits of the teacher's parents.
Zhang said there are edible plants in the area. Ren also has access to water, as he mentioned he was near a creek in the text message he sent to rescuers.
Ren went to Yunnan with a friend surnamed Luo. Ren went hiking alone while his friend waited at the foot of Cangshan Mountain.
