Second stem cell center opens

SHANGHAI has launched a second stem cell collection center at Shanghai No. 1 People's Hospital, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

The center is to cater for the rising number of donors who cannot be handled by the existing center in Huashan Hospital, the report said.

Currently, there are more than 98,000 donors registered at Shanghai's stem cell bank and 152 have made donations.

Stem cells are routinely used in medical therapies for illnesses such as leukemia - a fatal blood disease.
