Second time round for Canada Pavilion
CANADA is to auction its World Expo pavilion for a second time, after the company that secured it first time round failed to pay the 130 million yuan (US$19.61 million) price on time.
An official with the pavilion said yesterday that it will go under the hammer on January 23. The starting price for the auction through Chinese online auction platform Jinmajia.com is 20m yuan - the same as before.
Its kitchen, furniture and appliances will also be on offer, with a starting price of 780,000 yuan.
Jinmajia.com declined to reveal which company failed to pay in time.
The 6,000-square-meter structure, among the largest foreign pavilions at the 2010 Expo, has more than 1,100 tons of steel that can be recycled.
The scrap steel alone could fetch more than 3 million yuan.
Its interior was designed by Canada's world-famous Cirque Du Soleil and it was one of the most popular pavilions at the World Expo. Visitors had to wait for several hours to enter.
The Switzerland Pavilion, including its 6,000 exterior solar lights, was sold for 7.02 million yuan through the same website in November.
A company from Zhejiang Province won that bid and plans to rebuild the pavilion by Qiandao Lake.
