Security guards block traffic in protest
NEARLY 50 security guards of a residential community in Minhang District blocked the driveways yesterday morning in a protest over low pays and long hours.
The disgruntled guards blocked vehicle traffic during the morning rush hour, causing many residents to go to work late, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.
The report said local residents had made many complaints to the Waigaoqiao Property Management Co Ltd for its poor service as thefts, leasing of flats as dormitories, and illegal taxi operation often occurred in the community.
They then chose a new company called Hanren which took over the management of Shanghai Cambridge yesterday.
Though the employees of the previous company are allowed to stay, they are unhappy because they have to work longer to get the same pay, one guard said.
A resident said many security guards brought their relatives to live in Shanghai Cambridge, turning some apartments into dormitories. They also engaged in illegal businesses, such as driving outlawed pedicabs.
Police have taken several protestors for questioning, the report said.
