Senior card offers preferential treatments to the elderly

SHANGHAI'S senior citizens are able to enjoy various preferential treatments such as free or discounted admission to scenic spots and cinemas with their senior cards following the establishment of "Shanghai senior card alliance," the city's civil affairs authorities announced today.

The card similar to a bank debit card is credited monthly since the city started implementing a comprehensive senior subsidy policy last May.

Authorities set up the "senior card alliance" to further expand the cards' function for elderly residents to enjoy preferential treatment in various areas.

The list includes 18 parks, 28 tourist attractions, more than 2,500 banks, and over 150 cinemas.

Among them, the Shanghai Guyi Garden, Gucun Park, Shanghai Zoo and Century Park will offer free admission to senior card holders above 65 years old, while the Shanghai Wildlife Park, Yuyuan Garden and Da Guan Yuan, or Grand View Garden, will give half-price discount to the elderly.

Senior residents above 70 years old will be exempt from tickets if they come to the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, Zhaojialou Ancient Town, Shanghai Auto Expo Park and Wusong Paotaiwan Wetland with their senior cards.

"Seniors' demands are given full consideration with surveys conducted before the first batch of public service venues and businesses are released," said Zhu Qinhao, director of the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau.

Shanghai's senior population in 2016 grew 5 percent from 2015 to reach 4.58 million, accounting for more than 31 percent of permanent residents.
