Senior land official probed for corruption

HU Jun, deputy director of Shanghai Urban Planning and Land Resources Bureau, has been suspended from duty to assist his corruption probe, the Beijing-based Economic Observer reported today.

Hu, 46, was in charge of the city's urban planning, land allocation, and real estate market supervision.

His name has been removed from the list of the bureau's senior officials, according to information on the bureau's official website.

The Economic Observer quoted insiders as saying Hu was led away by investigators for corruption committed when he was the chief of Jing'an District Urban Planning and Land Resources Bureau.

Chen Meng, former vice director of Putuo District, was on trial for taking bribes of more than 15 million yuan (US$2.38 million) when he was the boss of a large state-owned real estate company in Jing'an District. His confession probably led to Hu's downfall.
