Senior officer pleads innocence
A FORMER senior police officer charged with taking bribes withdrew his previous confession at his appeal hearing yesterday.
Teng Shengqiang, 48, former senior engineer with Shanghai Traffic Police, had been sentenced to six years after being convicted of taking 90,000 yuan (US$13,181.94) in bribes, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.
But Teng appealed the verdict and yesterday maintained the money was pay for training staff at the Shanghai Yufan Transport Facility Co Ltd.
Teng said he had confessed to bribe-taking in the first trial after being tortured. He made his confession when he was extremely exhausted during interrogation and under pressure from the officers.
Teng, a postgraduate of Tongji University, was a first-rank technical supervisor with the traffic police.
