Senior official detained for bribery

FORMER Deputy Party Secretary and Chairman of the Shanghai Airport Authority Wu Jianrong was detained yesterday for taking bribes and hiding assets in off-shore accounts, the No. 1 Branch of Shanghai People’s Procuratorate said.

The prosecutors didn’t reveal the amount of money involved.

Wu was detained after being expelled from the Communist Party of China and dismissed from office over serious violations of discipline and laws.

The CPC Shanghai Commission for Discipline Inspection and the Shanghai Supervisory Commission said they have conducted an investigation into Wu’s case.

Wu, 56, seriously violated political discipline, according to the investigation.

He colluded with others to make confessions and transferred bribes and evidence during investigations.

He also refused to cooperate in the investigations and engaged in superstitious activities. He violated both the Party’s eight-point rules by visiting private clubs and the frugality code by seeking profits for his wife’s company and accepting huge amounts of money, cards and gifts.

He was also found to have taken advantage of his position to seek benefits for others and accept huge amounts of money and gifts, according to the statement.

As a senior cadre of the CPC, Wu had received long-term education and cultivation by the Party and had been appointed to many leadership positions, the statement said.

However, he had lost his ideals and convictions and turned public power into a means to seek personal benefits.

The commission decided to expel Wu from the CPC and the office, and confiscate his illicit gains.

Wu once served as the deputy secretary-general of the Shanghai government, director of the Shanghai Commodity Price Bureau, as well as deputy director, deputy Party secretary and head of disciplinary inspection group of the city’s development and reform commission.
