Seniors urged to be careful of strangers

SHANGHAI police have urged city elders to be more careful in dealing with strangers after they arrested a man on Wednesday who had robbed and killed a solitary woman by pretending to be a delivery man.

The suspect, surnamed Wang, 20, who hails from neighboring Jiangsu Province, confessed to the crime, police said yesterday.

Police have warned solitary women, especially senior residents, to be careful of being strangers following them, and not to casually open the door to strangers who knock to check water meters, offer house renovation or sell products.

The victim, a 55-year-old retired woman from Jilin Province, was found dead on Tuesday evening. Police broke into her apartment in Lane 45 Chunquan Road in the Pudong New Area after her daughter found no one was answering the door when she visited her.

Police said they found the victim lying in blood with several injuries to her body. She was stabbed to death.

Police checked the surveillance footages in the area and found the suspect.

The footage showed that Wang entered the building around 9am with his face covered. About an hour later, the man was seen walking out of the building, wearing a cap and without his bag that he was carrying before.
