Set to serve with foreign language knowledge

STAFF at downtown shopping malls and restaurants have begun studying the basics of multiple foreign languages to better serve customers from around the world during the China International Import Expo.

More than 1,000 staffers at major shopping malls, speciality stores and eateries along the popular commercial streets in Huangpu District are being trained in basic foreign language skills.

The Huangpu District Commission of Commerce has released a handbook entitled Practical Foreign Language for Business Service.

It includes basic greetings and conversation in English, Japanese, German, and French.

Training sessions will be organized to teach languages to staffers as well as service skills and etiquette. The malls and restaurants are also being asked to carry out their own training.

“The landmark commercial streets in Huangpu aim to offer the warmest and unforgettable services to customers from both home and abroad,” said Chen Zhuofu, deputy director of Huangpu.

The district released a new batch of regulations yesterday on services at retail and food companies as part of its ambition to develop “global standards” in the commercial streets.

The new standards cover facilities, environment, personnel and management.

One clause, for example, stipulates retailers should offer refunds for customers from outside Shanghai through logistic services. It also notes staffers must be able to speak both Mandarin and English to serve those from abroad. The district will invite third-party institutes to evaluate the services.
