Shanghai Cancer rates increases slowing down

CANCER rates among Shanghai residents have been growing at a slower pace in recent years, health officials said today.

Incidences of cancer grew by 6.7 percent over the past 10 years, said the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention said.

This compares to an increase of 15.9% over the preceding 10 years.

The center did not give an explanation for this slow down.

An average 162 new cases detected in the city every day, with men accounting for 53.3 percent of those.

Lung cancer accounts for about 17 percent of all cancer in the city, followed by colon cancer on 13 percent.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among local women.

Cancer is the second most deadly disease in the city, after cardiovascular conditions.
