Shanghai Customs busts an oil smuggling ring

The Shanghai Customs said today that it seized 1,700 metric tons of illegally imported oil in a 10-day anti-smuggling drive. The haul has a market value of 15 million yuan (US$2.35 million).

Police caught five smuggling vessels near the mouth of the Yangtze River, including two ships and three barges. Officers detained 41 suspects and arrested 37 of them on criminal charges.

Following tips from the public, more than 100 customs officers were assigned on August 11 to monitor suspect cargo ships from the Taiwan Straits and they figured out the route of the smuggling vessels.

Taking advantage of Typhoon Muifa, the officers pretended to be flood control authorities and located the smugglers' hideout in an outlying village.
