Shanghai Kunqu Opera to stage the classic ‘Four Dreams of Linchuan’

“Four Dreams of Linchuan,” a representative work by ancient Chinese playwright Tang Xianzu (1550-1616) will be staged by Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe during its national and world tour performances.

Tang is considered the “Shakespeare of the Orient.” “Four Dreams of Linchuan” include four classic plays — “The Peony Pavilion,” “The Tale of Southern Bough,” “The Tale of Handan” and “The Purple Hairpin.”

The national and world tour will start in May. The artists will also take the Kunqu Opera classics and host a series of lectures for foreign audiences in Prague and New York.

The troupe also announced an artist committee today. It is composed of 11 Kunqu Opera professionals who will help to create new original plays and nurture young talents in traditional theater.
