‘Shanghai Lady’ finds new home in city skyscraper
GUANGFU Museum today donated the sculpture ‘Shanghai Lady’ to Shanghai Tower.
The sculpture is the only one made by famous oil painter Chen Yifei (1946-2005) and will be exhibited on the tower’s ground floor.
The 3-meter-tall sculpture was made in 2000 in his studio on Taikang Road. It was based on his oil painting about a Shanghai woman in the 1930s. The woman is wearing a qipao and holding a birdcage and fan. Chen gave the sculpture to the museum in Beijing before he died.
"The graceful posture of the woman in the sculpture is similar to the twisting design of Shanghai Tower," said Ma Weidu, the museum’s curator.
Shanghai Tower will be the world’s second tallest building at 632 meters upon completion.
