Shanghai Maritime Court deals 73 percent more cases than 2014

Shanghai Maritime Court had accepted more than 4,700 cases last year, seeing a 73% from 2014, the court recently announced.

According to a white paper the court released, 351 of these cases were related to the city's pilot free trade zone and most of them were handled by the court's tribunal of the FTZ.

And 310 cases were with overseas parties involved, including those based in Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan.

The court explained that such increase in disputes may had something to do with the economic downturn in shipping market.

Disputes over contracts for carriage of goods rose sharply last year and 2,060 cases of such disputes were accepted by the court, increased by some 117 percent than 2014.

Moreover, 33 vessels were seized and 16 of them were auctioned or sold off.
