Shanghai MicroPort Medical opens pacemaker plant

The country’s first production line for pacemakers that meets international standards was established at Zhangjiang High-tech Park in Pudong New Area over the weekend.

The country started researching pacemakers in the 1960s. However, it lacked key technologies and domestic production never amounted to much.

Currently, 99 percent of pacemakers in China are imported, industry insiders said. That is expected to change with the new production line launched by Shanghai MicroPort Medical (Group) Co and its Italian partner.

The company is expected to product pacemakers with cutting-edge technology that are at least 30 percent cheaper than imported products, said Luo Qiyi, chief technology officer of MicroPort.

About 540,000 people die of sudden cardiac arrest each year in China. More than 600,000 patients need medical devices implanted such as pacemakers. Imported pacemakers usually cost 40,000 yuan (US$6,356) to 50,000 yuan, which many patients in China can’t afford.
