Shanghai Symphony Orchestra stages East-meets-West concert

A concert of both west and Chinese pieces will be staged by Shanghai Symphony Orchestra at Shanghai Symphony Hall on Saturday night, conducted by Chinese conductor Shui Lan.

Apart from Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.3 in C Major and Shostakovich’s Symphony No.10 in e minor, a traditional Chinese melody piece “Deep Night” widely used in Peking Opera will highlight the concert.

“Deep Night” though originally used in Kunqu opera “Si Fan” (Thinking of the Worldly Pleasure” featuring plaintive motions, is more widely known to most Chinese today as the melody in Peking opera “Bawang Bie Ji” (Farewell My Concubine) featuring Yu Ji’s love for her king.

Well-known Jing-hu player Jiang Kemei and Jing-er-hu player Kong Weijuan will cooperate with Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in presenting a new version of “Deep Night” adapted by Chinese composer Chen Qigang.

“Yu Ji is a beautiful woman who carries both gentle and soft features as a traditional women, and toughness just like many modern women to stay with her king in war and despair,” says Jiang, “We will make sure to present both the features through music.”
