Shanghai To Act On Concerns Raised By Fire
Shanghai is determined to break the monopoly enjoyed by some government-backed contractors in the wake of the November 15 fire, Mayor Han Zheng said yesterday.
The high-rise inferno raised concerns in terms of public safety inspections, especially the lack of supervision and fairness in the construction market, Han said.
Some departments had used their power and influence to monopolize some projects and, as a result, only a limited number of companies had the chance to win bids, Han said.
The Shanghai Jiayi Company, in charge of decorations at the building, was a sub-contractor of the building's renovation project. The state-owned Jing'an Construction Group, the project's general contractor, outsourced the work to Jiayi, which is also its subsidiary.
